Federation of Hospital and University Employees [Local 34 | Local 35 | District 1199]

GESO is proud to organize in partnership with the other members of the Federation of Hospital and University Employees (FHUE). In addition to GESO, the Federation includes three other unions of Yale employees. Local 35 represents the service and maintenance employees and Local 34 the clerical and technical employees. District 1199 is organizing employees of Yale-New Haven Hospital and already represents dietary workers at the hospital. Over the last decade, the FHUE has emerged as a singular, powerful coalition of workers united by our value to the University and our common conviction that the Yale can become an even better institution. Connecticut Center for a New Economy [CCNE]

New Haven is a city with a wealthy university surrounded by poor neighborhoods. Yale has begun to change its historically bad relationship with the city of New Haven. Yale runs programs for high school students, helps employees buy houses in certain neighborhoods in the city and supports the arts. But because of Yale's impact on the city and the benefits it gets from the government, Yale has the moral responsibility to be a real partner to New Haven.

Residents of New Haven are demanding a "Social Contract" with Yale to forge a lasting partnership between the city and the university. The six tenets of the new Social Contract are

• Public Education
• Access to Good Union Jobs
• Housing
• Health Care
• Immigrant Rights
• Environmental Stewardship

Learn more about the Social Contract.

Members of GESO have a positive impact by acting collectively to support the Social Contract in concert with the Federation and other residents and organizations in New Haven, including the Connecticut Center for a New Economy.

Undergraduate Organizing Committee [yale UOC]

In recent years, the Undergraduate Organizing Committee (UOC) has brought hundreds of Yale College students together to defend the rights of all workers to organize and to stand for a partnership between Yale University and the communities of New Haven. In particular, the UOC has: worked to educate the undergraduate community about the work of Yale’s unions; worked with GESO to call for improvements in the staffing and provision of undergraduate teaching; pressed the Yale administration to protect freedom of speech and assembly on Yale’s campus.

Academic Unions [CGEU | listing of other grad unions]

Academic unions, including graduate unions, have grown exponentially across North America in recent years. GESO has worked with many of these unions through the Coalition of Graduate Employee Unions (CGEU) and in other coalitions for progress in our universities. Learn more about the scope of academic organizing from coast to coast.

In particular, look at the websites of our union colleagues at Columbia University and the University of Pennsylvania. [Columbia/UAW | UPenn/AFT]

Other Academic Organizations

A host of other academic organizations have also weighed in on the issues of casualization and corporatization that affect everyone in universities. Read some of the most relevant statements by major professional organizations. [MLA | APSA | AAUP]

Our International Union [UNITE HERE]

Like all graduate unions, GESO is affiliated with an international union. We are proud to be a part of UNITE-HERE, one of the fastest growing and most progressive unions in North America.
