Highlights
of our contract
The full text of local
35's contract is available on Yale's
Human Resources page. We'd like to highlight four sections
in particular.
Extra
Straight Time (section
3.2)
When extra time is available in a work unit, it must be distributed
equally. It should go first to union members working less than
40 hours/week, and then should go to casual employees.
Health and Safety
(section
19.7)
No member will be subject to discipline for refusing to perform
work that the member considers unsafe.
Casual Employees
(section
30)
We won the right to represent casual employees in the 1996 contract.
Casuals who have worked in a department for 390 hours become members
of the Local 35 bargaining unit, with all its rights and protections.
Once someone reaches this point, they become a "post-probationary
casual" and they may bid on posted positions.
Casual employees who have worked 780 hours
in a one year period will be offered a permanent 10-hour position.
Benefit Level for
Part-time Employees (section
3.2)
In the 1996 contract, members who average 20 hours a week for
a period of 26 weeks will become benefit-level employees, and
will be offered a schedule of at least 20 hours per week.

Human Resources page.
