Ways to Get Involved

HELP ENFORCE THE CONTRACT:

1.  Maintain close contact with your union leader/steward

2.  Inform the steward of contract violations

3.  Help investigate---gather documents, survey other members

4.  Sign class action grievances or petitions

5.  Support members who file grievances

HELP KEEP OTHER MEMBERS INFORMED:

1.  Maintain a union bulletin board

2.  Draw cartoons or help write short articles for the union newsletter

3.  Make sure co-workers get the Union newsletter

4.  Encourage fellow members to come to departmental and membership meetings

KEEP THE LOCAL STRONG:

1. Become a member of the union committee in your department2.  Become a contract committee member during negotiations

2.  Learn how to become a steward

3.  Help with talking to new workers about the Union

BE A MOBILIZER:

1.  Encourage other members to attend a Union rally

2.  Support other union workers at rallies, meetings and picket lines

3.  Agree to talk to church or community groups about current Union programs

4.  Help with organizing new workers; leafleting, house visits, worksite visits

HELP WITH POLITICAL ORGANIZING:

1.  Attend a local legislative meeting (example: The New Haven Board of Aldermen)

2.  Attend lobby days at the state capitol

3.  Speak at a public hearing

4.  Volunteer on an election campaign and on election day
